It’s been a heck of a year for Nintendo: The Wii game console, which celebrates its first birthday on Monday 19, sold almost 14 million units worldwide and is now poised to dominate its second holiday season. On the handheld side of the market, the Nintendo DS has been an even bigger success, having sold nearly 55 million units since its introduction in November 2004. None of that would be possible without Shigeru Miyamoto, who saved the company’s floundering American division in 1981 by creating Donkey Kong. In the mid-’80s, with Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, he breathed new life into the then-moribund console market, establishing fundamental gameplay concepts that defined entire genres. In anticipation of this week’s release of Super Mario Galaxy—the first “real” Mario console adventure in five years—TONY took advantage of the opportunity to speak with Miyamoto when he visited San Francisco during the summer.
The recent “I Am 8-Bit” art show in Los Angeles featured serious art inspired by video games. Overwhelmingly, the artists’ favorite subject matter seemed to be Nintendo characters. Punch-Out!!'s King Hippo, Piston Honda and Bald Bull, Mario, The Legend of Zelda’s Link, Donkey Kong. What is it about these images and characters from Nintendo games that seems to get stuck in the subconscious?

Nintendo Announce Nintendo DS Gold and Metallic Rose Edition

In a press release, Nintendo announces two Nintendo DS bundles, Nintendo DS Gold Edition and Nintendo DS Metallic Rose Edition, that will debut this holiday season.

The first Nintendo DS bundle is the Nintendo DS Gold Edition. This bundle composes of a special edition gold-colored Nintendo DS with a Triforce symbol (from the Legend of Zelda series) embedded to the lower right of the cover top.

This bundle also comes with the Nintendo DS game, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. A direct sequel to the Nintendo Gamecube's The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is the first Zelda game for the Nintendo DS. Using the touch screen exclusively for controls, Phantom Hourglass was a critical hit, scoring an average ratio of 89.2% at gamerankings.com and a metascore of 90 at metacritic.com.

The other Nintendo DS bundle debuting this holiday season is the Nintendo DS Metallic Rose Edition. The Nintendo DS in the bundle will be colored with metallic rose. In addition, a puppy's paw symbol is embedded on the lower right of the cover top.

The second bundle also comes with the Nintendogs: Best Friends Edition. Nintendogs is a best selling dog owner simulation game for the Nintendo DS. In the game, you raise your virtual dogs like you would with real dogs. Nintendogs has gotten an average ratio of 84.4% at gamerankings.com and a metascore of 83 at metacritic.com. The Best Friends Edition, which is only availble in Nintendo DS bundles, composes of six of the most popular dog breeds from the other versions.

While the Nintendo DS Gold Edition caters to the hardcore male demographic, the Nintendo DS Metallic Rose Edition caters more to the casual female gamers.

The price has not been announced for the Nintendo DS Gold Edition or Nintendo DS Metallic Rose Edition. However, a regular Nintendo DS retails for MSRP $129.99 while a typical Nintendo DS game retails for MSRP $29.99. The two new bundles should retail at around the same range as the total cost of buying a Nintendo DS system and a game.

Nintendo Announces Limited-Edition Zelda Gold and Nintendogs Metallic Rose DS Lite

Nintendo has officially announced two newly repackaged DS Lite handhelds, which was leaked from a Sears circular a couple weeks ago. While the guts and functionality remain the same as in current Nintendo DS Lite handhelds, the new handhelds are being touted as collector's item because of their color and branding.
From Nintendo: "The glimmering Gold edition of the Nintendo DS shows the world your passion for excellence and grandeur, since it comes bundled with The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass – the year's biggest hand-held adventure game – and is emblazoned with the series' signature Triforce logo. It's a shiny nugget that any gamer – girl or guy – would be proud to show off. For those looking for a different kind of dazzling color, the new pretty-in-pink Metallic Rose edition puts a futuristic sheen on your color scheme. It's bundled with Nintendogs, the acclaimed puppy-interaction software that lets players select, train and play with their own canine companions. And the hardware comes accented with a distinctive pink puppy paw print." The two new DS Lite bundles are currently listed within another bundle on Gamestop.com. Looks like GameStop may be currently selling them as it says "Usually ships in 24 hours." The bundles come packaged with additional games, selected by GameStop. The Nintendo DS Lite Zelda Bundle comes with the Zelda Gold DS and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, along with GameStop's bundled Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass Official Strategy Guide, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker and Final Fantasy III for $239.96. GameStop's Nintendo DS Lite Nintendogs Bundle comes with the Nintendogs Pink DS Lite and Nintendogs "Best Friends", along with GameStop's bundle of Nintendogs (Dalmatian), Nintendogs (Labrador Retriever) and Petz Dogz 2 for $249.96. If the Sears circular that leaked is correct on the pricing, the Gold DS Lite with Zelda PH and the Pink DS Lite with Nintendogs will retail for $149.99 on their own. Could this be among the last color variations before we see a new Nintendo DS? We'll have to wait a bit more to find out.

By comparison, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which held the number one spot for nine years running, has an average review score of 97.6 percent from 31 reviews.Well, at least both games were designed by Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto.
Metroid Pime (GCN), Soul Calibur (DC), The Orange Box (PC followed by 360), Tekken 3 (PS1), Resident Evil 4 (GCN), Super Mario 64 (N64), and Half-Life 2 (PC) round out the current top 10.

Wii Zapper

One of the best elements of the Nintendo Wii is the unique set of controllers. Not only that, there have been aftermarket attachments that turn the controller into a more-realistic racker, for example. Yesterday(11/19/07) Nintendo released the Zapper, a controller shell for both the Nunchuk and Wii Remote that looks like, well, what do you think it looks like?
The Zapper ships with a game, Link’s Crossbow Training, which is really a training ground for use of the Zapper, though it is derived from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. You play as Link in 27 mini-games which fall into two genres: target practice and protecting Link from enemies.
Nintendo plans to come out with more controller shells.

NEW ZELDA DS LITES!!!

If you've grown bored with your white DS Lite, or if the black just isn't cutting it for you anymore, perhaps you'll find the new Gold version more to your liking, especially since it comes bundled with a game.

The Gold version comes with Phantom Hourglass, and has a Triforce etched prettily into the casing.

They're pretty darn sweet. Perhaps it's time for me to put my DS Phat into storage and upgrade to Lite. Pic of the gold version follows^.
